More than 150 on- and off-campus groups participated in the initial 15 month planning process.
Three recommendations are at the core of the plan:
• Develop circulation infrastructure to foster community
• Consolidate the historic core campus to preserve its vitality
• Move beyond College Hill
These principles describe a strategy that enhances the campus environment, makes more effective use of existing campus assets, meets space needs through the expansion of campus facilities and selected acquisitions off campus, and positions the University for long-term growth. The plan identified 1 million square feet of infill construction and 500,000 square feet of renovations within campus boundaries to make better use of existing assets.
The Walk, a new green space linking the Brown and Pembroke campuses, is the locus for several new academic building sites. The Jewelry District, in downtown Providence, provides space for research centers and the medical school. Ship Street Square is the University’s gift to the community.
