New York City PS 56

This public school for 400 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade pairs a historic building with a modern addition.

The addition is visually distinct from the historic building, but functionally united. It is sited to maximize sunlit outdoor play space. The two buildings are joined by a corner entrance pavilion opening onto a intimate plaza gathering space. Lower floors include the school library and a cafeteria that opens onto the play space. Upper floors include classrooms, with art and science rooms located in the prominent corner pavilion. A new gym is designed to function as an auditorium and performance space. The auditorium in the historic building is repurposed as the music suite, with the historic skylights restored.
