Behind the Scenes Look at Fabrication of Sculptural Canopy

Our offices on West 26th Street and 8th Avenue in New York City are getting a facelift courtesy of a KHA team led by Alex Diez AIA and the building owner, Newmark Grubb Knight Frank.

The redesigned facade of the first three floors includes a new curtain wall and a 17-foot long sculptural aluminum canopy cantilevering six feet over the south lobby entrance. The canopy is composed of 61 unique ribbons that organically develop from a band of vertical louvers along the facade. Each ribbon is cut by computer-controlled water jet from sheet aluminum. To realize the complex form, metalworkers meticulously shape each ribbon by making progressively tighter bends with a pneumatic brake press.

The canopy has been designed in collaboration with the metal fabrication company Kammetal based in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

The installation of the canopy this summer will complete the project.
